Maintaining a Clean and Healthy Garden
With the weather warming up, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the garden. But if you’ve been neglecting your plants this winter and spring, the last thing you want is an out-of-control weed problem. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get ahead of things before all those weeds start popping up. Here’s a garden cleanup routine that you can consider for your landscape maintenance needs:
Do a quick run.
If you’re waiting for the sun to go down, the rain to stop, or for your plants to grow, you can use that time to do a quick run through your garden. If there are any weeds in it, pull them out by hand. It’s much easier if they’re still young and tender; if they’ve grown large enough that they have roots established in the soil, just cut them off at ground level with shears or pruning scissors and throw them away.
Brush up mulch around shrubs and plants.
Mulch is a layer of organic material like leaves or grass clippings. It helps to retain moisture in the soil and keep weeds at bay, while also preventing soil erosion. Brush up mulch around shrubs and plants with a stiff brush or garden rake after they’ve been trimmed back during spring cleaning, but before new growth begins in summer.
Remove old foliage.
If you have hanging baskets and patio pots, it’s important to remove old foliage at least once a year. Make sure there is no water or debris left in the pots. Then remove any dead plants or foliage; you can use scissors if necessary. Next, wash out your pots with a sponge and water that has been mixed with one tablespoon of bleach for every four gallons of water used. Rinse thoroughly and let dry before reusing.
